St Mary the Virgin church is one of the oldest in the district dating back to the 12th century Norman invasion. It is an outstanding example of Norman architecture and has hardly been altered since its construction with the exception of the sixteenth century south porch and a modern north aisle and top stage of the tower. Bagwell Green, Odiham Common and Shaw are designated as a Sight of Special Scientific interest for their grassland and woodland. There is also a Stone Age settlement at Bagwell Green. The Basingstoke Canal runs through the Winchfield area with a car park provided for canal users and a launch and landing area for small boat enthusiasts.
Winchfield House is a Grade II listed building, home to the same family for five generations it is now operated as a bed and breakfast and wedding venue. The House has been renovated sensitively and is filled with family antiques, paintings and beautiful fabrics. The house resides in rolling parkland with fantastic views, there is also a lake stocked with carp and a heated swimming pool. Dressage horses are stabled to the side of the house.
Winchfield biannual festival is centred around the church, initiated over 16 years ago to raise funds for a new church organ. Since then the festival has expanded with the help of the local community to include both fun and educational events. The festival usually features a BBQ and a selection of jazz, opera, classical and world music. The Winchfield Festival is a properly constituted charity.
Situated just south of the M3 Motorway between junctions 4a and 5 the village is located close to transport links but retains its rural identity. There is also a railway station which linked to the village in 1838. Initially this was the terminus point for all rail services from London until the track was extended a year later to Basingstoke. The line now provides a regular service to London Waterloo and Basingstoke.
